About PT BNI Multifinance
PT BNI Multifinance is a part of PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, which is a state-owned commercial bank in Indonesia. PT BNI Multifinance provides various financial services such as consumer financing, retail, transportation financing, and many more. The company was established in 1989 and has since grown to become one of the leading finance companies in Indonesia. It has a wide network of branches and service points throughout Indonesia, making it easily accessible to customers. The company’s mission is to provide innovative and customer-oriented financial solutions to support the growth of its customers’ businesses.
The Challenges
PT BNI Multifinance, like many companies, faced various challenges during its digital transformation journey. One of its challenges was to meet its target of having 30 branches operational by 2023. The need to update its core system was part of a new management strategy as its previous core system still needed improvement. This new core system was an end-to-end application designed to streamline the customer journey and enhance speed and efficiency.
Due to its tight deadline, the company IT infrastructure team decide on the cloud to run the new core system which was divided into five major applications for PT BNI Multifinance business operations.
“Our business strategy to open and expand the business portfolio requires speed and IT expansion. Due to tight deadlines as well as delays in the procurement process due to global issues, our team proposes and decides to use a cloud-based solution. Our primary target is to deploy the new Core System application and supporting applications by March 2023, while ensuring high availability and the best technical support. Another important consideration is that PT BNI Multifinance must comply with regulations, and therefore, requires a cloud provider with a data center located in Indonesia,” said Yudi Satriadi Thamrin as IT Division Head of PT BNI Multifinance.

CDT Proposed Solutions
High availability was a key requirement, AWS Cloud provides a ready-to-use platform that includes multiple availability zones for high availability and disaster recovery. This ensures the company systems are always available and minimize the risk of downtime or data loss.
PT BNI Multifinance uses several AWS Cloud services such as; Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) for running application core services and Relational Database Service (RDS) to store the critical transactional data from the core system with expertise in database management, including automatic backups, software patching, and monitoring.
As a finance company, PT BNI Multifinance also needs to secure its data with Web Application Firewall (WAF) to improve security by protecting the migrated applications and databases from potential web-based attacks.
During the migration process, some of the company applications are still part of a monolithic application architecture, which means that they are tightly coupled with other services and may have dependencies on specific hardware or software configurations. To solve this challenge, CDT uses the Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) for running apps that had already transformed from monolith to microservices.
CDT also implements two AWS Cloud migration pillars; re-platform and lift & shift, to move the applications to the cloud. By using a combination of these two strategies, CDT was able to migrate the applications to the cloud quickly and efficiently while still maintaining its functionality.
CDT supported PT BNI Multifinance migration process to AWS Cloud in just three months, which was considered a fast-paced project. CDT worked closely with PT BNI Multifinance’s team to ensure a smooth and successful migration process.
Results and Benefits
After completing the migration process, PT BNI Multifinance experienced several benefits from its new AWS Cloud infrastructure. In terms of business performance, PT BNI Multifinance saw an increase of approximately 50% in speed, which were previously time-consuming and cumbersome.
“For example, before, credit marketing officers had to travel back and forth between dealers and the office to enter data. With the new mobile application, they could now enter data directly from its mobile devices, saving time and increasing efficiency. Another benefit of the new AWS Cloud infrastructure was seen in the survey location process, which could now be monitored in real-time. Previously, it would take several days to process a survey, but now it could be completed in a matter of hours, significantly improving response times.” Alfid Ardyanto, IT Infrastructure Manager of BNI Multifinance explains.
Applications that previously took a week to process are now being approved or rejected in just a few days. This speed improvement has had a significant impact on the business, with operations becoming more efficient and allowing PT BNI Multifinance to serve its customers more quickly.
In addition to the significant speed improvements and efficiency gains, the migration to AWS Cloud infrastructure enabled PT BNI Multifinance to fulfill their requirement for high availability. AWS Cloud allowed PT BNI Multifinance to minimize downtime and ensure continuous service to their customers.
